Roe v. Wade narrowly hangs on by a 5-4 Supreme Court margin. President Bush's 2005 budget increases funding for abstinence-only curricula in public schools while widely cutting funding for other programs. The FDA is stalling the
decision for over-the-counter approval of Emergency Contraception. In 2003, an
important and politized abortion procedure was banned. On the federal, state,
and local levels, anit-woman forces are chipping away at reproductive health
access.

What does a United States of America without reproductive freedom look like?
What was life like before Roe v. Wade legalized abortion?

Dr. Takey Crist, Susan Hill, and Betty Gunz will be presenting their personal
stories about women's reproductive health. Each one will recount her or his
experience in the era before Roe v. Wade legalized abortion throughout
the United States. Dr. Crist worked at UNC from 1965-1973. While at UNC he
acted as a champion of sex education and promoted honest discourse about
reproductive issues on campus before opening his own pro-woman clinic. Ms.
Gunz has testified repeatedly to our lawmakers to ensure that women will
never be forced to end unwanted pregnancies in the same way that she did:
through an unsafe and illegal abortion. Ms. Hill is the president and CEO of
the National Women's Health Organization. Her organization owns women's
health clinics throughout the eastern United States, including the only
abortion provider in Mississippi.

Full editorial - N&O 2/7/05

First of all, I wanted to thank the N&O for covering the “Honk for Choice” event (Groups Mark Abortion Ruling, 1/23/05). It was the smaller of two events that the local chapter of NOW (National Organization for Women), Pro-Choice North Carolina, and Planned Parenthood ran together on Jan 22nd.

Our second event, "The Choice is Yours", drew over 70 people to Michael Dean’s restaurant. Our speakers included politicians, religious leaders and lawyers. All are feminists, which means we all want equal rights and opportunities for women.

Topics included the medically inaccurate sex education being taught in Wake County schools, pharmacists who refuse to dispense Emergency Contraception even after a woman is raped (the “Pharmacists Refusal Clause”, and even broader legislation (11/04) that allows health care organizations to refuse to comply with existing federal, state or local laws pertaining to abortion.

The health care legislation is titled the "Abortion Non-discrimination Act", (a.k.a the "Federal Refusal Clause" or the "domestic gag rule"). The "gag rule" ignores the fact that abortion is legal, even if medically necessary. This program violates existing medical ethics that mandate giving a patient full information about her medical options.

Please join us in our fight for women’s reproductive rights. If you are not concerned, you should be!
