Expose Wal-Mart, Have a Party!

There is a new way we can expose the anti-women and anti-worker policies of Wal-Mart. Robert Greenwald, who produced "Outfoxed" about Fox News, is making a new film, WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price, which is scheduled to be released this November.

You yourself can view the film or even host a screening. The only way this film will get out to a mass audience is with your help and support. Unlike popular would-be blockbusters, this film will premiere in thousands of homes, churches, community centers and family businesses the week of Nov. 13, 2005.

"WAL-MART" promises to expose the mega-retailer in the same way that Greenwald's "Outfoxed" and "Uncovered" shed new light on Fox News and the Iraq War. Wal-Mart's practices are hurting U.S. women and our families, and NOW believes it is critical to our future that a vigorous debate on these issues take center stage in this nation. That's why NOW is partnering with Greenwald's Brave New Films and other progressive groups to help make and promote this movie. This movie is a perfect fit with NOW's 3-year campaign to expose Wal-Mart as a "Merchant of Shame" and as a retailer whose greed for profits comes at the expense of women and people of color.

More than a film, "WAL-MART" will be a catalyst to help us ignite a broader movement bringing fairness to the marketplace and ensuring a vibrant future for every family -- not just the Walton family. This is a unique opportunity to unite people across the political spectrum -- from family business owners, to teachers, to neighborhood activists.

NOW is sponsoring screenings that week, on Thursday Nov 17 and during the day on Sunday, Nov. 20. Contact Gailya at 539-7702 for more details. If you are interested in hosting a screening on that day (or just interested in general), please sign up at the web site. You don't need to have a location for your screening -- we'll follow up closer to the date with helpful materials to make your screening a success.

SIGN UP FOR CHOICE!

January 22, 2006 will mark the 33rd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, which gave women the right to decide whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term. North Carolina NOW is sponsoring, once again, a full page signature ad in support of reproductive rights for all women, regardless of economic status. This ad will appear in the Independent (Triangle weekly newspaper) on Wednesday, January 18, 2006.

Signature ads are an especially effective way of showing massive support here in North Carolina for a woman’s right to choose. Now is a critical time to stand up and show your support. Copies of the ad are distributed to all legislators. The General Assembly needs to know that the majority of North Carolinians are pro-choice.

Join us by lending your name to the signature ad -- and encourage your pro-choice friends to sign up, too. We are asking for donations of $35 or more (minimum donation is $15.00, $5 for students), to help defray costs of the ad. We are also encouraging additional donations to help pay for names of others who find donations prohibitive.

Deadline for mailing names is January 8, 2006. The text below will appear, followed by names of all who have given permission.

“We, the undersigned, support a woman’s right to safe, legal, and accessible birth control and abortion.
We condemn the acts of violence and intimidation directed at women and their health care providers.
We agree that these rights extend to all women regardless of economic status, and, as taxpayers, affirm our support of the State Abortion Fund for indigent women.”

____ Yes, I want my name in the ad (print name as it should appear):

____ No, I don’t want my name to appear, but I want to help.

Supreme Court Actions

The changing nature of the Supreme Court raises grave concerns. With a nomination to replace the moderate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the Supreme Court is at an ideological tipping point. The stakes could not be higher for the American people on the issues of the environment, civil rights, workers rights, privacy and women’s health. The voices of concerned North Carolinians deserve to be heard during this nomination process.

The NC Just Ask for Justice Coalition is committed to representing the questions and concerns of North Carolinians. On behalf of NC citizens, the coalition urges the Senate Judiciary Committee to thoroughly question Harriet Miers about her views on constitutional protections for the environment, civil rights, the right to privacy, and women’s health and safety.

There are several ways to get involved:

 Attend the Just Ask for Justice roadside rally/visibility event 12-1 p.m. in front of the Federal Building in Raleigh, on the day that Miers’ hearings begin.

 Create a t-shirt! Can’t come to Raleigh? Design a t-shirt that articulates your concerns about Harriet Meirs and/or the Supreme Court, and submit it to the coalition. We will be displaying hundreds of these t-shirts from activists across North Carolina on a clothesline alongside our rally to create a powerful, symbolic and visual representation of our concerns. For a registration form and complete details, email: gailya@nc.rr.com

 Host a t-shirt making party! Gather your friends and neighbors together for an evening to make t-shirts, discuss current issues, enjoy good food and company! Contact gailya@nc.rr.com if you would like to open up your party to other “pro-choice” supporters in your neighborhood.

 Help with organizing and outreach! Email gailya@nc.rr.com for Just Ask for Justice fliers and registration forms. Distribute to your friends, neighbors, social and spiritual communities—get them involved with the campaign!

Your participation in this campaign will help us voice our concerns to Senator Dole and Senator Burr in a powerful visual display, making clear to them and our fellow Americans that the voices of North Carolinians.
