Nov, Dec Raleigh NOW Meetings

We have plans for our next 2 Raleigh NOW meetings.

Our November meeting will be Tuesday, Nov 11, so as not to interfere with election day. We will have a party to celebrate the end of election season, and to discuss what happened in NC and around the country. Bring food and stories!

We will do a movie night for our Tuesday, Dec 2 meeting. Send ideas for stories to president@raleighnow.org or call 919-539-7702.

Don't forget to sign on to NC NOW's pro-choice signature ad as soon as possible. Forms will be at the NC NOW conference, and in the next Raleigh NOW newsletter. Also, I can email you one. Same contact info as above.

2008 NC NOW State Conference in Raleigh

Please join us at our 2008 NC NOW State Conference in Raleigh on Saturday, Oct 11. Here are the highlights of the NC NOW conference on Saturday. We have some very interesting speakers and workshops. Hope they interest you as they do me. Please try to come for part even if you can't come for the whole thing.

We have a special guest, Retired Colonel Ann Wright, who is replacing our morning workshops! Colonel Wright will talk to the whole group about Danger Under Fire: Sexual Assault and Murders of Women in the Military. As you may know, another military woman was murdered in Fayetteville this week (Oct 1). She was married to another soldier. Retired US Army Reserve Colonel Ann Wright will present a workshop on sexual assault and murders in the military. By the way, October is Prevention of Domestic Violence Month. She will start speaking at 10am.

Our keynote speaker is Senator Janet Cowell, and she perfectly fits our conference theme of Women Leading NOW! Senator Cowell will speak about running for office in NC, and her own path from running for city council to treasurer. Janet will start speaking at 11:50.

NC NOW's lobbyist, Paula Wolf, will tell us about the 2008 short session. If you get her summaries, you know she has a keen wit!

Our afternoon workshops are as follows:

Chapter Action Swap Meet - facilitated by NC NOW Intern Sarah Colonna

Swap ideas for chapter actions with activists from across the state! Bring your stories of what has worked in your area, what hasn't, and ideas for actions that are still in the planning stages. Sharing, collaborating and brainstorming is what this workshop is all about!

Ending Violence in North Carolina's Schools - by NC NOW President Rebecca Mann

Join the discussion on bullying and harassment in North Carolina's schools, and find out what you can do to end it! This workshop will focus on the School Violence Prevention Act (also known as the "Anti-Bullying Bill") and on how a diverse coalition of organizations and individuals are working together to make sure all children are safe at school.

Due to time restrictions, please call 919-539-7702 if you would like to attend for all or part of the conference.
